August Is Indie Month! Day 31: Dance Legend - Hedgehog In The Fog

Aww, the very last post of August Is Indie Month! Day 31! It's been a blast and I'm soooo glad I dug in and tried some of those untried indie polishes! I hope you considered trying indie brands (or renewed your love for them also!). I wish I had time to use all my indie polishes this month but there are just so many. I'm hoping to incorporate some of them in next month's mani challenge (which starts tomorrow! Woo-hoo!) -- September Is Stamping Month! (<-- read the post to find out what stamping is, what I'll be using, and lots of other info about the next mani challenge!).

I'm super excited for this next challenge -- I suck at stamping (you will see my mistakes, my mis-aligned stamping, etc) -- but I'm hoping by the end of September you will see I have improved! This is NOT a blog with super perfect manis… I have dry cuticles and my hands suck from working as a nurse… I make mistakes… I take pics with my iPhone and a cheap $3 macro lens I bought on eBay! I don't have fancy lighting or an expensive camera. My manis are real, I don't use photoshop, filters, or colour correction. I take pics, crop, watermark and post them. I'm learning just like a lot of you are! So yeah, stamping is going to be fun, but far from perfect! Anyway...

For my final post, I selected Dance Legend & the shade, "Hedgehog In The Fog".

August Is Indie Month! Day 30: Nubar - Sour Candy

Today I managed to snag my first Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season! My store has them early so we stopped in while running errands. It's super hot/muggy out so I asked if (a) They could make it iced, and (b) Would that be gross. The barista said it tastes like pumpkin pie either way so I went with iced (no whip). It was good, but very, very sweet (next time I'll order it "half-sweet"). Yum!

Day 30! Wow, only one more day and then we're into the next mani challenge! So crazy! I'm excited for September Is Stamping Month! I even ordered some new stamping plates and stuff, they should be here early next week. :)

For today's mani I selected Nubar's "Sour Candy". I used SpaRitual's "Off The Grid" underneath since "Sour Candy" is a sheer glitter topcoat (more on this in the post).

August Is Indie Month! Day 29: Lac Attack - Amortentia

Day 29! Labor Day weekend! Woo! I just realized I'm turning 42 in exactly 3 months, yikes! Trust me when I say it sneaks up on you. My bday is also prime for Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales (yay!). But I think all I want this year is Advent Calendars… but not the chocolate kind. Last year I got the Essie 12 Days of Christmas one (12 full-size polishes, cuticle oil, and nail wraps!) and the Ciate one (a month of mini polishes, glitter, and caviar beads). This year I think I want both of those again but also the David's Tea one. Someone brought it up to me today and I did a Google search of images and they are so cute! Boyfriend has been put on alert. :) I told him instead of Christmas presents we should just get each other a bunch of cool Advent Calendars and spend December enjoying little gifts everyday. :)

Anyway, it's still August and it's still Indie Month! Today I selected Lac Attack and the shade "Amortentia". My readers who are Harry Potter fans will appreciate this polish more than most, I am sure! Also including a bonus pic of another mani I did with Lac Attack's "Dementor's Kiss". <3

August Is Indie Month! Day 28: La Couleur Couture - 1976

Day 28! Only 3 left after today! I'm already gearing up for September Stamping Month, are you?? :) Want to know more about next month's Stamping challenge? Click here for details!

For Day 28 I selected the brand La Couleur Couture (LaCC) and the shade "1976".

Requested Comparison: Cirque Colors Coronation and Cult Nails Flushed

As requested, here is a side-by-side comparison between Cirque Colors' "Coronation" (review/pics here) and Cult Nails' "Flushed" (review/pics here). I've never done a side-by-side comparison before!

These 2 colours are very similar but also very different, depending on the lighting -- I took pics under different lighting so you could see for yourself.

Bottle shot (under LED light). Cult Nails (Flushed) on top, Cirque Colors (Coronation) on bottom.
As you can see, Flushed is more blue-leaning purple with shimmer whereas Coronation is more red-purple with shimmer and holographic glitter bits (not jam-packed but they are obvious).

August Is Indie Month! Day 27: Cult Nails - Flushed

Day 27! Only a handful left to go! Then I'll be starting the September Is Stamping Month! mani challenge. Want to join me?? (& no, you don't have to do manis every single day!)

Want to more about the Indie August mani challenge? click here!

For Day 27, I selected the brand Cult Nails (NOT to be confused with the brand featured yesterday, CULT Cosmetics), in the colour "Flushed". This is one of those glowy purple shades that draw compliments like crazy because it's THAT pretty!

August Is Indie Month! Day 26: CULT Cosmetics - El Matador

Day 26! We're in the home stretch!

August Is Indie Month! Day 25: Different Dimension - Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock

Day 25! Only 5 more manis of this challenge left! Time really does fly when you're having fun. :)

For Day 25 I selected Different Dimension & the polish "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock". If you watch Big Bang Theory you'll get it. And I totally just realized at this moment that I'm doing 2 BBT polishes in a row! Ok, that's weird! It wasn't planned!

Next Month's Mani Challenge -- Stamping!!

Ok, a lot of people have asked me what the next mani challenge will be. I tossed around a few ideas and talked it over with some lovely ladies in our polish group and decided September should be Stamping Month! I love this idea because… well… I've dabbled in stamping but was never really good at it. I want to get better so doing a mani challenge would give me LOTS of practice! I have a LOT of stamping plates and think doing a challenge would be great fun!

(Previous monthly challenges: June Is Julep Month! & August Is Indie Month!)

I made a SUGGESTED guide to go with this month. I will be following it -- but this is NOT a requirement to participate!! Stamping is a lot of work and I can absolutely understand not wanting to do it every single day (unless you want to, of course!). Here is the guide I created (feel free to make your own based on your stamping plate collection!):

August Is Indie Month! Day 24: Dollish Polish - Penny… Penny… Penny...

Wow, August 24th! Summer is almost over! Makes me want to watch Dirty Dancing (1987)! So many of you must be excited (or not) about returning to school, and those of you who are parents must be busy "school shopping" -- I used to loooovvveee school shopping when I was a kid! I still do -- except I have no reason to buy school supplies. I'm taking this year off grad school for medical reasons so no new school stuff for me. *sad face* It's a necessary thing though -- and I'm sure the next year will go by super fast! A LOT can happen in a year!

Anyway, Indie August mani challenge Day 24! I selected the brand Dollish Polish & the shade "Penny… Penny… Penny…" (I'll just refer to it as "Penny" for the rest of this post!

What's the Indie August mani challenge?? Click here to find out more!

August Is Indie Month! Day 23: Lime Crime - Once In A Blue Mousse & Milky Ways

Day 23! Today's polish is by Lime Crime. There are a few things to say about this brand first. One, some people don't consider the brand to be a true independent. I personally do since it's really only available online and often sells out & is often hard to get (brand in general, not just the nail polish). Two, there is a LOT of controversy about the integrity of the brand itself. I am not going to weigh in or even discuss it. I was not there, I was not involved and I really, really hate to gossip. I'm sure you can find out the details yourself if you're curious. I personally do not care.

Want to know more about the Indie August challenge?? Click here!

Today I selected "Once In A Blue Mousse" & added polka dots on the ring finger with "Milky Ways". I'm also including a bonus pic of most of the Lime Crime polishes mani I did for Easter of this year. :)

August Is Indie Month! Day 22: Ruby White Tips -- An Ocean Full Of It & It's The Bomb Yo!

I'm super excited to show you these polishes! Day 22! Yikes! Only another week of manis left in this challenge! Want to know more about the Indie August Challenge?? click here to find out more!

For Day 22 I selected Ruby White Tips -- an awesome indie brand! Colour choice was tricky but I knew I had to go with one of the Breaking Bad Collection polishes (I bought them all in the winter -- yes, crazy, but I love the show & I love her polishes *winwin*). It took a while but I settled on "An Ocean Full Of It" and "It's The Bomb Yo!". If you watch the show, you'll get it! If you haven't watched the show -- I strongly recommend it! Crazy but so good!

August is Indie Month! Day 21: Indie Polish - More Smoke Than Fire & Pish Posh

I'm back! I didn't disappear! I just had a few days of severe migraines. This month is bad for them for some reason. So migraines, dark cool room, meds, sleep mask, and trying not to vomit. I had kitty nurses taking care of me, which was nice. Today I woke up without a migraine -- lets hope it lasts!!

Okay, Day 21 of Indie August. I can't believe it'll be over in just over a week. It went by so fast! I'm already gearing up for the September Challenge -- I'm making a stamping one! I will do a separate post about it so anyone who wants to join in for that can do so. I might do a colour one for October -- it'll give me a chance to use the NPC prize polishes I won. I would do it for September but I have no idea when those polishes will arrive -- plus, I already discussed doing September Stamping challenge with some ladies from our group -- and I'm super excited about it!

What's the Indie August challenge all about?? click here for all the details! :)

For Day 21 I selected Indie Polish's "More Smoke Than Fire" & "Pish Posh".

August Is Indie Month! Day 20: Serum No 5 - Shrinking Violet

Ok! After yesterday's excitement I'm ready to get back to the Indie August mani challenge! (want to know more about this challenge? click here for all the details!)

For today's mani I selected Serum No 5 -- a brand that I LOVE even though I only own a few of her polishes. I will be showing you "Shrinking Violet" but I'm going to sneak in a photo of a long-ago mani of "A Cup Of Teal" because it's sooo beautiful!

Nail Polish Canada's Great Polish Giveaway 2014 -- the winner!!

So yeah, it's ME! For reals, how crazy is that?! I found out yesterday but I waited until they announced it officially today before saying anything (SO hard for me to keep a secret! I get all squirmy/wiggly). They sent me the email yesterday evening and I had to read it over about 600x before believing it. My head was spinning and I was shaking and dizzy! I was fumbling with a pen to do a simple skill-testing question! LOL

I am SUPER grateful and excited!! Thank you to Nail Polish Canada and all the bloggers who selected their favourites and posted the widget so I could enter (I didn't enter ALL of them, maybe half?). I am also grateful and thankful to the contest sponsors: Cirque ColorsNCLA, and piCture pOlish.

They told me it would take a few weeks to get everything packed up and shipped out -- I promise to do an update post with tons of pictures when my prize arrives.

What did I win?? 200 bottles of polish! Want to know which ones I won? You can click here to go to the prize page and scroll through them.

I also urge you to check out the bloggers who contributed polishes (on the prize page, each polish has the name of the blogger) -- there are so many talented nail and beauty bloggers out there! Also check out the sponsor pages and Nail Polish Canada -- they have some really great things going on. These are brands I already use (and have reviewed!) and love! I also order from NPC all the time -- they are the best!

Everyone is asking me what I plan to do with duplicate polishes (ie. the ones I already own). I haven't decided -- I'm still trying to wrap my head around this! I will not sell them, I'm not comfortable with that at all. I will have to wait until the polishes arrive then sit down and sort/organize them all (oh no, I need to get more storage boxes, order swatch sticks and label tape!)… I will give some to my family (my sisters, mom and niece love polish too!). The remainder I will most likely do RAOKs (Random Acts of Kindness). But I can already feel people's expectations and it's making me VERY uncomfortable. :(

Want to know a funny thing? Almost an irony?? My very first order from Nail Polish Canada was almost exactly a year ago -- August 29, 2013! I had just started getting heavily into polish at the time. What a nice anniversary gift!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
<3<3<3

August Is Indie Month! Day 19: Nfu Oh - 54

August Is Indie Month! Day 18: Girly Bits - Peel Here & A Stripper Has Been Sleeping In My Bed

Day 18! Yes, I know it's actually Day 19. My fault for not posting yesterday, it was kind of a meltdown day for me (yep, I have mental health issues) and spent most of the day crying. It is what it is. But today is better (which I told myself yesterday it would be). So I will be posting TWO manis today! Yay!

Want to know more about the Indie August mani challenge? Click here!

I selected Girly Bits as my indie brand for Day 18. I have so many, which to choose?! I did review/post on 2 polishes by Girly Bits before (read them here!). I'm always blown away with how awesome her polishes are! So what did I pick for today's mani?? The 2-year Anniversary duo of "Peel Here" & "A Stripper Has Been Sleeping In My Bed". It's a party, I promise!

August Is Indie Month! Day 17: Models Own - Vintage Pink

Yay! Getting caught up! I hate being "behind" in anything. :)

For Day 17 of the Indie August Mani challenge I selected Models Own. I have seen this brand a lot but only own a few shades. I recently purchased "Vintage Pink", which may seem weird but I'll explain!

August Is Indie Month! Day 16: Colors By Llarowe - Rapture

SOOOOO sorry for not posting this yesterday (the 16th)!! I wanted to but I was seriously not good. I had a tetanus booster shot at my physical on Thursday. On Friday I was tired, headachy, blah, but still functioning. Yesterday I was SUPER drained and couldn't think straight. I am an RN but vaccines are not my area of expertise (I'm in critical care/trauma) and haven't had a tetanus shot since 2001. I don't recall having this reaction the last time (who knows, maybe I did?). But yeah, pretty much sat on the couch the entire day trying to get my brain to work properly (was SUPER foggy). Either way, I didn't get the post written up, didn't go to the gym, barely ate. I sucked. :/ MUCH better today though -- so you get TWO posts today! Day 16 and Day 17 of the Indie August mani challenge!!

Want to know more about this challenge (& maybe jump on board)?? click here to find out more!

For Day 16 I selected Colours By Llarowe… a hard choice since I have a bunch of them I've been wanting to try. I settled on "Rapture" -- and so glad I did because it's a super pretty blue holo!

August Is Indie Month! Day 15: Crows Toes - Indian Summer

Day 15! Halfway there! It's been sooo much fun so far! Definitely helping the rest of summer pass by. The weather is changing, almost time for fall, sweaters, scarves, pumpkin spice lattes, and being extra cozy (my fav!). :)

Want to know more about this Indie August mani challenge?? click here to find out more! (and you can always jump on board if you like! Let me know and I can add you to the list of participants. :)

So this is a super special mani. I didn't think I would love this colour so much -- but honestly, it's probably my all-time favourite polish now! The weird part is, I bought it months ago and it's been sitting there untried all this time. SO GLAD I tried it because… wow… just WOW!

What colour am I talking about?? For Day 15 I selected Crows Toes' "Indian Summer". <3 *swoon* (seriously, you will *swoon* too!!)

(warning: whole lotta pictures, but I don't think you'll mind)

August Is Indie Month! Day 14: Polished By KPT - Nightcrawler

The weather today is super cool & windy (17C here in Toronto), feels like fall! I love it!

For Day 14 of the Indie August mani challenge I selected Polished by KPT (or just "KPT") "Nightcrawler". This is my absolute favourite of the thermals so far and while it's not an untried for me, I had to show you!

(Wait! What's "indie August"?? Click here to read up about it!)

NB: I took a LOT of pics of this one so you can see how it looks in different light/temperatures!

August Is Indie Month! Day 13: Literary Lacquers - Bionic Mmmm-Detector

Today is one of those day where I don't feel like doing much of anything, know what I mean? I think I'm in a more contemplative mood. Robin Williams' suicide really stirred stuff up for me (my own father killed himself, ironically the anniversary of his death was Aug 3… I really hate August now!). BUT, the show must go on!

For Day 13 I selected Literary Lacquers' "Bionic Mmmm-Detector". A glorious, glittery dream…

August Is Indie Month! Day 12: Mentality - Pilot

Sorry for getting this up late, I had a lot of running around to do today. There's a lot of crazy dramas happening around Julep right now, I'll probably save that for another post (but it's important to share my experience). But today isn't about Julep, it's about Mentality Polish!!

What's the Indie August Mani Challenge?? Click here to find out!

I only recently heard of Mentality polish when Harlow & Co started carrying the brand. I was looking for something new and I decided to get a few of the matte polishes. OMG! They are awesome!! I am featuring "Pilot" today -- but I did a mani with "Gorgeous" several months ago that I have to share one picture of because it's so amazing!

August Is Indie Month! Day 11: The Hungry Asian - Strawberry

I am sooo excited about today's mani. It's such a beautiful polish! For Day 11 of the Indie August mani challenge I selected The Hungry Asian's "Strawberry" -- and I promise you will love it too! If you follow my blog at all, you know red polish is my absolute favourite -- no idea how this one slipped under my radar for so long because it's incredible!

For my Day 10 mani I chose the brand KBShimmer and the polish, "You Autumn Know". It's more of a fall colour, yes, but it'll be fall soon enough! And yesterday I saw orange leaves on the ground so it'll be here very soon -- so excited!!

August Is Indie Month! Day 9: Cadillacquer - Where Is Carl?

Wow, first day in 7 that I woke up without a migraine! yay! Must be the meteor shower & super moon this weekend. *fingerscrossed* I hope it stays this way!

Day 9 is Cadillacquer, a brand I absolutely adore! It was a touch choice but I selected "Where is Carl?" for today's mani. :)

August Is Indie Month! Day 8: A England - Iseult

Okay, as an advance warning, I'm writing this post with a migraine and having taken migraine meds and I'm seriously dopey/stoned. So if none of this makes sense I apologize. And no worries, I always have my manis done at least a day in advance in case something comes up. Thank god I do that, because there is no way I could do my nails right now! I am also grateful for the ability to dim the screen so the light doesn't blind me. So lets get on with it!

For Day 8 I chose to feature A England -- it was a VERY difficult choice as she makes such elegant and stunning polishes of the finest quality. But I picked "Iseult" (one of my untrieds) and I'm so glad I did!

August Is Indie Month! Day 7: Hue - Champs Élysées

Wow, the first week of Indie August is done! It went by so fast!
(what is "Indie August??", click here to find out the details!)

For Day 7 I chose a polish from the Square Hue (or just "Hue") subscription box. I tried it out for a few months but eventually cancelled. The polish is awesome, it was just getting expensive for the box & shipping (I'm in Canada and the exchange rate shifted out of my favour, it was getting up near $30 a month which I wasn't pleased with). Plus, being in Canada, the shipping was SUPER slow -- as bad as Julep, if that's even possible! Anyway, I'll add details about the subscription at the end of the post.

Day 6 ended up being "Champs Élysées" -- very delicate, soft & pretty!

August Is Indie Month! Day 6: Enchanted Polish - Kids

Yay! Day 6 of the Indie August mani challenge! (what's this? you ask, click here to find out more!)
For day 6 I chose Enchanted Polish -- an indie polish indeed, though highly, highly coveted. I have several of them, and I reviewed a few here (not many since I've only been blogging since May!). The one I selected for today is called "Kids". I did wear it over a black polish base, so it may look a bit different than other photos you've seen. But give it a whirl, I think you might like it! (NB: Picture-heavy post!!)

August Is Indie Month! Day 5: Vivid Lacquer - The Bitch Is Back

Hello lovlies! Day 5 is upon us! I always get excited for August because I'm really NOT a summer person at all. I'm a winter baby and I think I just prefer cooler weather, fall, snow, winter. The sun/heat/humidity & me just do not get along. I pretty much just feel sick and get migraines and blistered/rashy skin all summer. No fun. So yay! that we're heading into fall shortly! :D

Onto Day 5 of the Indie August Mani challenge! (wait! what are you talking about?? click here for all the details!). I went with a polish from a collection I adore. The brand is Vivid Lacquer -- many of you know her for the incredible stamping plates she designs (they really are amazing!). But hey, she also makes some really beautiful polish! It was a hard decision but today I selected "The Bitch Is Back" for my Day 5 mani.

Yay! Day 4 of Indie August! If you don't know what I'm talking about and want to know more about this daily mani challenge, click here!

I chose Indigo Bananas for my Day 4 mani. I've used her polish before, you can see that post here. I went with "Immortal Game" -- one of those colours you are drawn to & keep picking up/putting down/picking up again. NO idea why I haven't used it yet but I am SO GLAD I did today!! I am in love!!

August Is Indie Month! Day 3: Philly Loves Lacquer - Clevemore

Yay! Day 3! I'm already having fun with this! I love mani challenges, it gets you out of your comfort zone, pulling out some untried polishes or re-discovering an old favourite. This being "indie" month (i.e. independent polish makers), the focus is on all those super hard-working ladies (& a few men!) who put so much love, creativity, time, money, and effort into making some pretty phenomenal polishes. They need promotion because they don't have an advertising budget, they tend to rely on word-of-mouth. Well, this is my goal - to spread the word of the awesomeness inside indie polishes!! Plus, a lot of people are looking to get into buying/using indie polishes but don't know where to start. Hopefully my posts & those of the other lovely & talented participants in Indie August will give you some enlightenment. :)

Anyway, onto Day 3! For this one I chose the brand Philly Loves Lacquer. I purchased a set of minis of one of her collections in the winter (more on this later!). I kept reaching for them but finding something else instead (which is how people end up with a huge cache of untried polishes!). They are also minis so they kind of get lost in the shuffle. Mini polishes are smaller versions of the regular polish bottle size. It's a good way to test-drive a polish maker you've never tried before to see if you like their polishes. Some people hate minis, I think they're super cute!

The colour I chose for Day 3 was a tough one (it was a toss-up between 3 different ones! argh!), it is called "Clevemore".

August is Indie Month! Day 2: Emily de Molly - Black Forest

So sorry for the late post. I was up until 4:30am reading (<-- bad girl!) and slept in until noon then had a bunch of stuff to do before getting down to mani time. But I did not forget!!

Want to know more about the Indie August mani challenge?? click here for the details!

I have a handful of Emily de Molly polishes and they are all so beautiful! I have been wanting to try "Black Forest" since I bought it several months ago. Emily de Molly polishes are created in Australia (purchase details can be found at the end of the post!) and are 3-free. I'm not sure if this particular polish was part of a collection but from what I can gather it was created in 2012 (please correct me!!).

August is Indie Month! Day 1: Cirque - Coronation

Yay! for Day 1! I'm so excited to be doing another mani challenge! If you missed my last one, click here to check out the "June is Julep Month" mani challenge I did (or there are links to the side, all posts in June were dedicated to Julep!).

But this is a month dedicated to Indie polishes!! Wanna know more? click here to find out what this is all about!

So the first indie brand is Cirque Colors -- a NYC-based brand that has some amazing polishes! For reals, they are so rich and pigmented and beautiful. They are 3-free, wear well and I have zero complaints. One of my favourite brands. I have swatched & written blog posts of their polishes before (click here to see them). But for my first post of the Indie August month, I had to use my all-time favourite: Coronation. It was hard to choose this one, I have several untried Cirque polishes. And Coronation is NOT an untried polish for me (I used it once before, right after I bought it). But it IS incredible and I thought it was a good way to kick off Indie August!

Oh, and this post is picture-heavy!

SO much more after the jump!
